Silvia Mangia

Dr. Mangia is Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR) at the University of Minnesota. She got her master degree in Physics (1999), Ph.D. in Biophysics (2003) and title of "Specialist in Medical Physics" (2005) at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (Italy). Her research agenda largely aims at providing quantitative measures of tissue metabolism, structure, and function by MRI and MRS methodologies. Large part of her efforts is devoted to diabetes research by using a variety of MRI methods, including those developed within the human connectome project for measurements of cerebral blood and functional brain connectivity. She is also leading innovative research on the characterization of how neuromodulation interventions affect brain functional connectivity and biochemistry. Focused on innovation and translational research, she developed and utilized novel MR methods such as RAFF, MT and adiabatic T1rho to identify pathological processes in diseases like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, mucopolysaccharidosis and osteoarthritis. She co-authored 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is co-inventor on two patents. Dr. Mangia is funded by several intramural and extramural grants, serves as grant reviewer for international and national institutions including the NIH, serves as scientific reviewer for a variety of scientific journals, and entered the editorial board of 3 journals including one from the Nature Publishing Group.
